Understanding My DeFi Pet and the Role of Chainlink VRF
Our players, also known as Pet Masters, are no strangers to the game mechanics involved in raising a unique pet army. In My DeFi Pet, each pet can have eight traits, which can include a wide number of variations in the Wings, Tail, Paw, Horn, Glasses, Amulet, Aura, and Outline. Through Chainlink-powered randomized breeding, a pet acquired from an egg may or may not have all the body parts above. Additionally, DeFi pets have genes that are split into either dominant or recessive genes, resulting in different offspring based on how they are expressed. Each pet has its own strengths and weaknesses that give it varying levels of combat ability, staking APR, and even aesthetic qualities.
In technical terms, egg hatchings use random numbers as inputs that are combined with the “gene traits” and the probabilities of those gene traits being expressed to birth new pets. The total realm of possible outcomes contains over 2 million variables in appearances and stats.
Building randomness using blockchain technology helps prove the integrity of the random outcome in a transparent manner. However, randomisation mechanics, either centralized or using on-chain data, are still subjective to exploits and tampering. For example, on-chain block hashes alone can lead to minor reorg attacks and off-chain RNG data providers are opaque. Even established game publishers are struggling to deal with this problem across game genres, evidenced in major game companies such as EA — who have historically struggled with their loot box mechanics — and various gacha games (games that use randomized mechanics to offer new characters and items) in the mainstream market. Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) works in the following manner. For every new request for randomness, Chainlink VRF generates a random number and cryptographic proof of how that number was determined. Our smart contract only accepts the random number if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides users with automated and publicly verifiable assurances directly on-chain that each My DeFi Pet using Chainlink VRF for randomness is provably fair and cannot be tampered with or predicted by the oracle, outside entities, or the development team.
