Pandora Invasion is Integrating Chainlink VRF for Fair Randomization in NFT Champion Claiming and Upgrades
We’re excited to announce that Pandora Invasion — an NFT-based civilization game — is integrating Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on the Ethereum and Polygon blockchains. By integrating the industry-leading decentralized oracle network, we can leverage tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness to claim and upgrade NFT champions. Ultimately this creates a more exciting, transparent, and fraud-proof user experience, as users can enjoy fair gameplay knowing they own randomly generated and upgraded NFT champions.
What is Pandora Invasion?
Pandora Invasion is a strategy civilization game. Players build an army of Champions to invade other players’ fortresses for bounty or collaborate to fight common enemies such as dungeon bosses. The key difference between Pandora Invasion and other traditional games is that every player has ownership over the game. Champions are NFT tokens for players to keep. Additionally, through ownership of Pandora Coins (DORA), players can cast their vote to make key decisions about the future of the community, such as new Champion direction and battle reward distribution.

In order to be transparent in the randomized NFT champion distribution and upgrade process (as simple as who gets Stalker, Vanguard or Shadow), we need access to a secure random number generator (RNG) that any user could independently audit. However, RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. For instance, RNG solutions derived from on-chain data like block hashes can be exploited by blockchain miners, while RNG solutions derived from off-chain data providers are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.
After reviewing various solutions, we selected Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by time-tested oracle infrastructure, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.
Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Pandora Invasion smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that Pandora Invasion is provably fair and was not tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the Pandora Invasion team.
