Strata Using Chainlink VRF in its Whole Picture Project to Create Dynamic NFT Art Designed by Héctor Falcón
Strata is a new type of gallery. We are building a hybrid space where digital and physical art elevate each other, and are exploring new interactions between art, artists and the audience. Our first project, Whole Picture, is the exciting start of this journey and went live this week!
Whole Picture is an NFT art experience in collaboration with acclaimed artist Héctor Falcón where owners construct NFT artworks through a combination of choice and chance. Chance, or true randomness, on the blockchain is notoriously difficult so to ensure that we are fair and transparent, we have integrated the Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) — the industry’s leading secure and auditable random number generator. By using the VRF, we aim to build trust with participants and community members and create an exciting artwork that is truly unique and dynamic.
Héctor is a groundbreaking artist from Mexico whose work has been featured in the world’s foremost galleries and leading art fairs, including Volta, Frieze and Art Basel. Héctor is well-known for his playful, idiosyncratic series Constructive Modular Extraction: complex, multi-layered paintings, where holes are carved away from each individual canvas to reveal glimpses of obscured layers below.
Whole Picture is the continuation of Héctor’s artistic vision in an interactive, digital form. Together, we have designed an art experience that allows participants to co-create their own multi-layered NFTs with Héctor’s striking canvases. Each NFT consists of four stacked canvases of varying rarity that are unveiled during an onchain art event. Canvases are revealed one by one, each shuffling up to 5 times (when 4444 new blocks are added to the chain). With each shuffle, owners face a choice: lock their current canvas to their artwork, or wait 4444 blocks for the next one. Once the event is finished, owners can explore the infinite combinations of their canvases by creating overlapping, intersecting arrangements. Chainlink VRF is used to randomly select the first canvas choice of all NFTs, ensuring that the start of the event is truly spontaneous. Future layers are influenced by a combination of the VRF random seed as well as the actions of each participant — any time a user locks, it alters the next starting index for all canvases.
The reason we integrated Chainlink VRF is that it’s transparent and high-integrity, meaning users have tangible evidence that it’s a truly fair source of randomness. Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is unknown when the VRF request is initiated with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has valid cryptographic proof, and a valid cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides users with automated and verifiable assurances that each NFT was generated in a provably random manner that could not have been manipulated by the oracle, blockchain miners, project participants, or Strata team.
“In Whole Picture, we have created an intriguing balance between control and chance that makes participation both meaningful and exciting,” said Jasper Degens, Co-Founder of Strata. “The final NFTs will reflect the tastes of each individual, but are also unpredictable. This element of chance needs to be trustworthy, and by using the VRF we guarantee that our NFTs are influenced by verifiable randomness. As a result, the Whole Picture becomes a thrilling experience where you’ll never know the outcome unless you participate. This is one of the ways we at Strata are leveraging blockchain technology to create new and exciting art experiences.”
Whole Picture is the beginning of a long-term journey. We want to grow a community around innovative art and bring value and utility to all participants. With this in mind, buyers of the two higher tiers in Whole Picture will be rewarded with a $STRATA tokens airdrop later this year.

Chainlink is the most widely used and secure way to power universally connected smart contracts. With Chainlink, developers can connect any blockchain with high-quality data sources from other blockchains as well as real-world data. Managed by a global, decentralized community of hundreds of thousands of people, Chainlink is introducing a fairer model for contracts. Its network currently secures billions of dollars in value for smart contracts across the decentralized finance (DeFi), insurance and gaming ecosystems, among others.
Chainlink is trusted by hundreds of organizations to deliver definitive truth via secure, reliable data feeds. To learn more, visit chain.link, subscribe to the Chainlink newsletter, and follow @chainlink on Twitter.
Strata is a new gallery with a small international team based in Tokyo, London and New York. Strata is interested in answering two questions: can intangible and tangible art interact in a mutually enriching way? And how does the blockchain ecosystem unlock new ways artists and audiences can connect and create together? Strata’s guiding principle is that artworks are not merely one-and-done transactions. Instead, projects are designed to evolve, providing long-term value and utility for owners, artists and community members.
