World Weather Online to Launch a Chainlink Node to Bring High-Quality Weather Data to Blockchains
We’re thrilled to announce that World Weather Online will be bringing its premium weather data on to blockchain networks by launching our own Chainlink oracle node. Through the Chainlink node, we can get our existing suite of APIs blockchain-enabled, empowering us to supply our extensive set of weather data directly to smart contracts applications across all the leading blockchains, as well as cryptographically sign our data on-chain to prove it originated from World Weather Online. This allows us to actively participate in the creation of entirely new blockchain-based weather markets and products via supplying developers premium, tamperproof weather data used to trigger the execution of automated contracts and payments.
Some of the initial use cases we already see emerging on top of blockchains, which require high-quality weather data, include various types of smart contract-based parametric weather insurance products that allow farmers to hedge against unexpected droughts, homeowners to protect themselves from natural disasters, supply chains to cover the possibilities of late marine-based shipments, and much more.
Using Chainlink to Bridge World Weather Online Data to Leading Blockchain Networks
World Weather Online is a weather data provider dedicated to supplying accurate and up-to-date weather reports from around the globe, including the latest ski conditions, marine conditions, surf reports, holiday weather reports, weather predictions for sporting events, and day to day forecasts for towns and cities.
World Weather Online currently covers approximately 3 million cities/towns worldwide and our weather forecast is trusted and used by a wide variety of companies and organisations from SME’s to large corporate clients. We have developed our own weather forecasting model, which delivers reliable and accurate weather information for any geo-point in the world. Our weather model is run along with other meteorological models to ensure we deliver the most accurate weather forecast possible; these include the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, World Meteorological Organization, NASA weather satellite imagery, NOAA GFS2 model, and JMA model for research and training purposes. We also operate two high-tech weather data centres; one situated in Denmark and the other in Germany.
The way weather is consumed and the way it impacts everyone is changing. World Weather Online is committed to helping developers use our weather data and insights to build more options for swiftly and correctly dealing with such changing weather conditions. Seeing the rise in smart contract applications built on blockchains, it became clear that this new data-driven infrastructure offered new opportunities for building more advanced and efficient weather-related products. This includes not only the many types of parametric weather insurance products listed above, but also exotic derivatives contracts and supply chain enhancements to protect against changing weather patterns.
Since blockchains cannot make external API calls as a built-in functionality, we required an additional piece of secure middleware known as a blockchain oracle to bring our weather data on-chain. Oracles retrieve external data on behalf of the smart contract, validate it via unique cryptographic signatures, and broadcast it on the blockchain to be consumed by the smart contract.
After examining different oracle solutions, we identified Chainlink as the most secure, reliable, and time-tested oracle solution on the m arket. It also has a rapidly growing network effect of data providers and blockchains applications already relying on it’s middleware to connect with one another. Some of the unique features available on the Chainlink Network that we found beneficial to us as a data provider, include:
- Data Integrity – The Chainlink node signs API data on the blockchain to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks, allowing us to prove the origin of data supplied by our node.

World Weather Online plans to leverage these features to become a highly reliable and trusted node operator on the Chainlink Network, providing smart contract developers across a variety of blockchains with premium weather data signed at the source. This will give them direct on-chain access to key weather data metrics like forecasts, rainfall, wind speeds, snowfall, ocean tides, and much more.
